Connecting BD85K to Fios WiFi with WPA2
so far so good on this blu-ray player. Amazon was so easy to transact with. Using this player with a Denon AVR-790 and a Harmony One remote and connecting to a Panasonic G10 Plasma TV. The pictures on HD channels look amazing. I haven’t yet gotten into the upconversion options for SD.
I’m still tinkering with all the features of the Denon and Panasonic, but I wanted to advise readers on the challenge I had with connecting the BD85k to Fios WiFi.
I’m fairly technical and I had my home network using WEP encryption. However, the Panasonic was not authenticating to my home network. I made sure the WEP key was using lower case letters and that still didn’t resolve the issue. My Fios wasn’t seeing the Panasonic BD85K but the Panasonic was seeing my home network SSID. I called Fios and the help desk said that it’s likely I’d need to change to WPA or WPA2. So I switched to WPA2 on my wireless router and entered that info on the Panasonic BD85k and voila, it connected. It then prompted me to update the firmware, which I did with no problem, took maybe 5 minutes.
I next plan to sign up for Netflix and Pandora (which IS offered as of July 12 contrary to some posts). They also are listing Fox Sports as Coming Soon.

review of streaming video only – easy to use, very satisfied
I bought this player primarily to stream Internet movies. I have a conventional mail subscription to Netflix, so I was surprised to discover that currently Amazon has a much better selection of the current titles that I’m interested in seeing. I bought the unit for more $$$ than offered on Amazon, from that electronics chain outlet with the large blue & yellow logo. But I was skeptical that the setup would be as easy as it was, and wanted to be able to return it locally if necessary. I guess I should have saved some $$$ and ordered from Amazon. Setup was very simple, the menus guide you through it intuitively, all I had to do was put in the router password and it sucessfully connected to my home network (by wired LAN connection). This was followed by manually initiating a firmware update (which was simple). I tried out a film (unexpectedly got a credit worth 1 film from Amazon – thanks!) with my wife, which was delightful. I’m running a 2005-era 802.11g router so again I wasn’t sure this would work well, but it did. It connected wirelessly at two bars’ worth of signal strength (the wireless router is about 30 ft and 3 drywall walls away from the player). I didn’t think this was likely to be sufficient, so I utilized a long run of LAN cable that I happened to have handy. I was really suprised by the success of this, the film played without any delays, “jitters” or hiccups, and the resolution was certainly every bit as good as a DVD I would say (I’m not a resolution snob, and my 32″ LCD from 2006 only does 1080i). The only thing lacking was full surround sound, but this is likely because I was running coax digital audio to my older Sony A/V receiver (because it’s not HDMI enabled) and the manual indicated the signal gets down-converted to stereo when transferred by this route. I should be inheriting an HDMI-capable receiver along with speakers within the next few months, and I am anxious to see if the audio is handled as full 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound when sent by HDMI (the manual says this is what should happen). Hopefully I’ll be able to update the review later and let you know the outcome when I get the new receiver in place.

Well, a couple of months ago I received the first firmware upgrade and did not notice any add ons, oh well. Until two months ago, later and there they were…several add ons and Pandora. It also seemed that there were many more to come. The uploading of Netflix streaming is very fast and precise everytime. Also the HD quality of streaming is excellent as well. I highly recommend this Player. It is hard wired with a Cat-5 cable, so I cannot comment on the WiFi. I have had the Bluray player for a couple of months and I am very pleased with it. Upgraded from an older model…the picture quality is similar the panny is somewhat better, but I was more interested in the networking such as Youtube, weather, stocks, netflix etc. Also one of the main things I used on the Sammy was Pandora and netflix and it did not come with Pandora. That was disappointing even though it was suppose to have it.

Highly Recommended For Surperb picture and sound upgrade.
I had this player for over a month and all I can say is WOW! I was planning on getting a Sony ES1000 Blu-ray player to upgrade the sound CD music, but when I saw this Panasonic BD85 model and read info on it, I could not justify paying extra for the older Sony model. Tha Panasonic Blu-ray picture is perfect as far as my experience sees and the all the Dolby True HD and DTS Master surround sounds are surperb. But the real surprise for me is the sound adjustments that are for CD recordings. The 3 Tube amplifier simulated settings bring back that softer but more open sound of vinyl recordings, and have made me relisten to Herb Alpert, Chuck Mangeone, Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears and other music with a lot of horns and also classical music. There are also 3 Remaster settings to help with Rock, Country and Jazz and this can help improve those type to a sharper and brighter sound. Like this for the Beatles and other older recordings as it brings them to new life. I am extremely happy with this player and recommend it to anyone that wants to have better sounding CD music and make them sound like you have upgraded your entire system and also bring back that wonderful tube amplifier sound. Really, I’m that impressed with this unit!!! I have not yet tried the Netflix, but will soon. Amazon was best in price and free delivery, plus no sales tax, so that can save you also. Have never had any problems dealing with them for several years now, so thanks to them too. Hope this helps you in considering this player and Amazon.com as a good choice. Also just watch Avator, Toy Story 1 & 2, Up, Cars, Monsters Inc. all on Blu-ray with this player and maybe you,like me, could not be happier seeing them through this player. IMPRESSIVE !!!

Great player that delivers what it promised
I have had this player for a month now. My previous Blu-Ray Player was Pioneer 51d which was great.
I find Panny to be faster. Picture quality of Panny close to but not as good as Pioneer.
I bought this player for Netflix and I have watched 5-6 movies without any problems.
I also watched 1 Amazon on demand movie. I had a few performance issues but I am not sure if it was due to my network for this player. I have it connected to a wired network.
Recent firmware upgrade 1.23 brought Pandora which is awesome. It has played every Blu-Ray and Standard disc I have thrown at it.
Setup was very simple. The user interface for Network features is simple and easy to use.
This player might not have the bells and whistles of Sony, LG or Samsung but it much more stable and reliable.
I have no complaints. I wish this player had DLNA but it does not. Overall I am happy with my purchase.
