How do you find the optimum size of a pinhole in a pinhole camera?

We are making a pinhole camera for a project and know the size of the hole makes a difference. We’ve been experimenting with different sizes and are comparing the results but aren’t sure why some sizes are too small, and others too big. Also, we wonder how to find the optimum distance between the object being photographed and the camera.

The spacing between the pinhole and the film determines the focal length of the pinhole camera. In other words, that is purely a matter of choice on the part of the builder of the pinhole camera.

In turn, the spacing between the subject and the pinhole determines how large the image will be on the film for a given pinhole to subject distance. That is purely a matter of choice on the part of the user of the pinhole camera.

The issue of how large the pinhole should be is a design question. There are formulas that you can use to determine the optimum pinhole diameter for a given focal length. The major issue here is that using something other than the optimum pinhole diameter can result in a lack of sharpness in the image. There are several formulas for the optimum diameter – they can be found in books on pinhole photography and in various on-line resources.
