Holga lomo camera questions?
im looking to buy a holga camera!
1) with or without flash?
2) glass or plastic lens – does it make a huge difference?
I prefer the model without the flash. The reason for this is that that the Holga 120N, while it doesn’t have a built in flash, it does have a hot shoe, so that I can mount a flash when I need it. Being a shoe mounted flash, I can put a more powerful unit on the camera. The built in flash tends to be a little underpowered, unless you are close to the subject.
The glass lens will give you a sharper image, but when the point of shooting Holga for most of us is about the soft vignetted corners and the surreal look to the images ,it seems little pointless. I vote for plastic lens.

120 film is a little more difficult to deal with, since there are fewer labs that can process it. Ask around at your local Walmart, Costco or other 1-hour labs. While they may not be able to process the film on site, many of these labs will send the film out to be processed for you.
The next option is to find a local pro-lab. These are labs that specifically cater to professional photographers and will be able to process your film on site. As you might imagine, it can be a little pricey.
Another film processing option is to send out the film to be processed. Check out these processors, they both offer processing by mail:

Then the best of all option, process the film yourself. BW film processing and even color processing are not too difficult to learn and also not very expensive to get into.
If you think that 120 film is too much trouble, you can try a 35mm camera, like the Holga 135BC, or the Superheadz Black Slim Devil.

A Stylish Samsung S5150 Diva Debuts this January
There are few mobile phones out there with a distinctly unique styling that shouts “I’m a woman” inside and out. Here’s an addition from the Korean mobile phone giant Samsung. It’s the new Samsung S5150 Diva folder that will be out this coming January with other new Samsung lady phones. It’s not a fashion phone in the tradition of Prada, a D&G or an Armani.
But it oozes with just about the same fashion statement right out of the box without bothering those high fashion houses. The body texturing is what makes it stand out. It sports a three dimensional sculpted cube pattern that makes handling it a novel feel in your hands.
Great Specs for the Ladies
This is a basic mobile phone that has decent hardware features on a handsome, or rather pretty clamshell/folder body measuring 94.0 x 47.0 x 17.4 mm when closed and weighing a very light pocket-friendly 82.8 grams. It’s a tri band GSM900/1800/1900 with GPRS/EDGE.
There’s no 3G or WiFi which is understandable on an entry-level basic mobile phone. But you still get Bluetooth 2.0 for wireless high speed data synching between your handset and Bluetooth devices. Its other features include the following:
- You get a 2.2-inch TFT LCD display with QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) resolution and 16 million colors typical on any entry level mobile phones these days. It has a secondary display when the folder is closed but it’s monochromatic and neatly buried under the sculpted textured body. It is limited to displaying battery status, date and time and a flashing alert when there’s an incoming call or text message.
- Picture-taking comes with a decent 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with QVGA video recording. It has a software-assisted Beauty Effect that automatically enhances close-up portrait shots and a Lomo effect for clear old-style shots.
- Multimedia functions include media players that supports playback of popular audio and video file formats and comes with an FM radio with Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP so can use wireless stereo earphones. You won’t be able to use its 40 MB internal memory for storing large media files but you can use microSD cards up to 32 GB for this purpose.
- Its light 800 mAh lithium-ion battery powers the handset for up to 7 hours of talk time and 7.8 days of standby time.
- Software-wise, the Samsung S5150 Diva comes with a customized TouchWiz user interface that is decidedly feminine in execution and style. It features women-centric application like a shopping “Wish List” to keep tabs of you desired items to buy. It also has an “etiquette mode” that silences the phone when needed in a meeting or social gathering. Internet browsing, email and instant messaging are supported.
Coming Out January
Samsung’s new lady phone is expected to hit the European markets this January together with other new handsets to greet the New Year for the Korean mobile phone maker. Russia will get it first, followed by the Ukraine, the Netherlands and then the rest of Europe thereafter. No pricing information has yet been released but we don’t expect the Samsung S5150 Diva to be anywhere near a mid-price category. Your local network carrier will most likely have it free on a 12-month contract.
